5th grade students attend Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra concert and visit Milwaukee Art Museum

On April 9th, 5th grade students traveled to Milwaukee to attend a MIlwaukee Symphony Concert. This year was the first year that MSO (along with 39 other orchestras) partnered with the New York Philharmonic and Carnegie Hall to present an interactive Link Up concert called “The Orchestra Sings”. The students prepared music to sing and play on recorder in their music classes before the concert. At the concert, they performed with the professional musicians. Music on the concert included “Come to Play” by Thomas Cabaniss, “Ode to Joy” by Beethoven, “Simple Gifts” by Joseph Brackett, “New World Symphony” by Antonin Dvorak, “Bought Me a Cat” Traditional, arr. by Thomas Cabaniss, “To Make Words Sing” by Thomas Cabaniss, and “Oye” by Jim Papoulis. They also enjoyed an orchestra only performance of the Finale from The Firebird Ballet. Concepts of music were reinforced with the introduction to each piece. Attached below is a link to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel online article, pictures and video of the event.

After the concert, the students were able to eat lunch at Veterans Park near the Milwaukee Marina and view the wings of the Milwaukee Art Museum close and re-open at noon. After lunch we traveled to the Milwaukee Art Museum and went on docent led tours that connected the music from the earlier concert to pieces of art in the museum. The students also had the opportunity to visit the special exhibit on American Folk Art. This was a special treat for them as American Art has been their theme for study and art production this year. There is always something new to see and do at the Milwaukee Art Museum with so many educational, family oriented programs and the ever-changing exhibits. Students were excited to be presented with free passes to go back to the Art Museum with their family.
