The Johnson Creek School District held a celebration today recognizing the accomplishments of the students in providing for members of the community who are less fortunate than themselves.
The District partnered with the Jefferson County Christmas Neighbors program. Christmas Neighbors provided food and gifts to over 400 Jefferson County families Tuesday, as well as coordinated the adoption of another 200 plus families. That represents 1700-1900 children who benefited from this year’s drive.
The students of the Johnson Creek Schools collected just over 2000 food items that were donated to the Christmas Neighbors program for distribution.
In recognition of their work, the elementary students voted on a favorite teacher to “kiss an alpaca”. After a week long competition, fifth grade teacher Tim Wagner and Physical Education Teacher/Assistant Athletic Director Trent Probst were the teachers that the elementary student body selected. The Middle School students selected Science Teacher Fritzi Heckel and the high school students selected Business Education Teacher Jason Benish.
In addition, the elementary students challenged the Middle/High School to see which school could donate a greater number of food items. The elementary won that challenge which resulted in MS/HS principal Cale Vogel also kissing an alpaca. Elementary Principal Kristine Blakeley also stepped up when the elementary students exceeded her 1000 item challenge.
The additional incentive was realized when Superintendent Dr. Mike Garvey made good on his promise to kiss the alpaca if the students donated more than 2000 items.
