JC Future Business Leaders Attend State Leadership Conference

On Monday, April 13, members of the Johnson Creek Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) went to La Crosse to compete for a chance to attend the National Leadership Conference.

Earlier in February, Abby Hintz, Elyssah Cook, Samantha Woodward and Alyssa Layton competed in the Regional Leadership Conference and advanced to the State Leadership Conference.  On Monday, they all competed in their event in hopes of  getting to the final round. This group of girls and FBLA adviser, Mr. Perucco, left the school around 5 a.m.

When they arrived at the La Crosse Center, everyone attended the opening session. After the opening session ended, the students went on different tours. Cook and Layton went on a Food Co-op Tour. They learned how co-ops worked and how they benefitted the community.
“The tour was an interesting experience. I never knew organic chocolate tasted so good,” said Cook.

Hintz and Woodward went on to tour Century Link. “I learned many different things from this tour, but the main thing was how to get to the top and be successful,” said Hintz.

After the tours concluded, the students went back to the La Crosse Center to prepare for their events. Hintz and Cook had to practice their business ethics, which they presented on the topic of "Child Labor Laws." “I was pretty nervous going in and the pressure was definitely on. Then I started listening to the Jonas Brothers and my nerves went away,” exclaimed Hintz.

Layton and Woodward practiced their public service announcement on E-waste.
“I was pretty pumped. The fact that we made it to State is already a great achievement,” said Woodward.

As the day came to an end and our competitions were done for the day, the last thing all the FBLA members got to enjoy was a BMX Bike Show. “The BMX Show was awesome and I never knew that you could do that many tricks with a bike. Also, it was pretty funny when they fell!” Cook said.
Once that ended, the Johnson Creek FBLA headed to the hotel. You would think they would want to get some sleep since they had to get an early start the next morning, but that was not the case for these four ladies. Each one of them stayed up until their event scores were posted, which wasn’t until 11 p.m. Hintz and Cook were the first to find out and they were beyond excited when they got the news. “We were very excited and couldn’t believe we made it! But then the pressure was on even more,” said Hintz. Cook, on the other hand, “thought it was a joke and we weren’t actually going on to the finals.”

At least the Johnson Creek FBLA had one team advancing to state finals. It was a sad day for Woodward and Layton as their FBLA days came to an end. When asked how she felt when she got the news, Woodward responded, “I was upset with the outcome, but I was happy to be there. It was an achievement by itself to attend State. That alone makes me happy on how my senior year ended with FBLA.”

Tuesday, April 14th, Hintz and Cook were getting ready to present their topic for the final round in Business Ethics, while Woodward and Layton were getting ready to vote for the new state officers. Once the voting ended, Perucco, Woodward and Layton headed to a workshop with guest speaker, Amanda Hammett; where she discussed why social media is a good thing to have as long as you don’t misuse it. Once the workshop ended, to celebrate how proud Mr. Perucco was of his team, they all went out for some ice cream.

Since it was almost time for the awards ceremony, the group headed back to the La Crosse Center. “Everyone was anxiously awaiting to see if we qualified for Nationals,” replied Perucco. “It felt like time was in slow motion,” added Cook. Finally the countdown began and that seemed to speed up time. The announcer called out for Business Ethics to the holding area. Only the first five teams get called up. Waiting until the last one, Johnson Creek was called to the holding area. Cook and Hintz jumped with joy. As they walked up on stage, the nerves were kicking in again. They ended up getting 5th overall at state. First year members making it that far is pretty impressive. “I was proud of everyone overall. The fact that we had kids advance to state is quite an accomplishment,” said Perucco.

To end the day, the group headed to Grandad's Bluff to see where this great experience took place. “I couldn’t be happier. This was an exciting experience for everyone. I created so many memories with these ladies and can’t thank them enough. My senior year has definitely been an exciting one, especially through FBLA,” said Layton.
