On Friday, October 9, 2015, Elementary students were treated to two interactive drumming assemblies, one for 3rd-5th graders and one for Kindergarten-2nd graders, presented by Dancing Drum LLC from New Orleans, LA. Dancing Drum is in the Midwest presenting about 4 assemblies every day for two weeks!
“Mr. Steve” Campbell involved all students by teaching them to play dunduns, tone blocks and/or shakers. Most students got a chance to play two instruments, and some may have had a chance to play all three! The students learned Aramile, a wake up song from Nigeria, a Samba rhythm from Brazil, a Calypso rhythm from the Caribbean, and a Rock and Roll rhythm from the U.S.A. Mr. Steve also showed and played a Steel Drum. The students learned that a steel drum was made from recycled oil drums and how the different pitches are created. Mr. Steve also focused on teamwork, so that our 20 drummers, 40 shaker and tone block players would play together to make a wonderful sound. We even had a Samba parade during the assemblies.
We want to thank Friends of Our Schools and Mrs. Blakeley, who both sponsored this fun event. Additional photos and videos will be available on Mrs. Edington’s webpage
Below are some photos and video from the 3-5 Assembly.
