Hour of Code 2014

Last week, students participated in the annual Hour of Code as part of Computer Science Education Week . JC students were among tens of millions of people around the world to take part in the largest learning event in history.

Johnson Creek Schools held a district-wide Hour of Code event to expose its students to computer science. Students from grades 2-12 completed in at least one Hour of Code, using various types of programming options, including script based and "blockly." With the help of high school students T.J. Christensen and Madison Graf, students had the opportunity to learn to code with Anna and Elsa from Frozen, Angry Birds, Flappy Bird, and many others.

During Computer Science Education Week last year, 15 million students tried the Hour of Code. Computer science was on homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo! and Disney. President Obama, Shakira and Ashton Kutcher all kicked off the Hour of Code with videos. Over 100 partners came together to support this movement.

This year the Hour of Code movement is aiming for 100 million students. So far, 75 million students have participated in the Hour of Code.

We need to encourage and embrace our students’ interest in computer science. Every student deserves the chance to learn computer science to access the best careers of the 21st century.
