5th Grade Students Attend MSO Concert
5th grade students attended the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra concert: "The Composer is Dead" on September 23, 2014. The concert pieces were tied together by the mystery of who killed the composer? They also featured the families of the orchestra. Students heard "Night on Bald Mountain" by Modeste Mussorgsky (setting the mysterious mood), "Holberg Suite, Op. 40, Mvt. 1" by Edvard Grieg (strings), "Serenade No. 2 in A Major, Op. 16, Mvt. 2" by Johannes Brahms (woodwinds), "Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36, Mvt. 1" by Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky(brass), "Mambo" from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein (percussion), and finally, "The Composer is Dead" by Nathaniel Stookey and words by Lemony Snicket. This piece, with narration, interrogates each instrument musically, until the mystery is solved. I won't give away the conclusion, but the book and CD is available.
