Elementary Celebrates Dr. Seuss Day / Read Across America

On Monday, March 3rd, students at Johnson Creek Elementary kicked off  national "March into Literacy Month" and "Read Across America" by celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday. The Seussical celebration kicks off a week of reading across the nation as NEA members gather students, parents, and community members together to share their love of reading.

This month celebrates the love of reading among children and promotes awareness of literacy as a fundamental skill for success. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics 2007 Reading Report, 33 percent of all fourth graders in the US cannot read at even the basic level. Sponsored by the Toys for Tots Literacy Program, National March into Literacy Month encourages reading among children through a variety of activities and events. The Toys for Tots Literacy Program is a year-round initiative that offers our nation’s most economically disadvantaged children direct access to books and educational resources that will enhance their ability to read and to communicate effectively.

UW Swim Members Skype with Elementary School

Below, all elementary students gathered in the gym for a whole school Skype session with three members of the University of Wisconsin swim team. The ladies read Hello Bucky! to the students and allowed some time afterwards for a Q&A session. We are grateful to the university public relations department and the swim team members for helping to coordinate this school wide event to help kick off literacy month.
