The selection committee for the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship Program has announced recipients of the 2015 Herb Kohl Foundation awards for students and teachers.

Johnson Creek Middle School math teacher Megan Rojemann is one of those recipients. Mrs. Rojemann graduated from UW-Whitewater with a degree in elementary education and a minor in special education. She began her teaching career at St. Joseph's elementary school in Waterloo, where she taught for two years. She then taught at Yahara Elementary in DeForest. Mrs. Rojemann began her career with the Johnson Creek School District in 2008, teaching 6th grade in the elementary school for 5 years before moving up to join the middle school math team in 2012.

When asked about receiving the award, Megan stated: "I was extremely grateful for the nomination and very excited to be considered."

Mrs. Rojemann is very deserving of this award. She is an innovative teacher, consistently incorporating technology into the curriculum. She has an excellent rapport with her students and is a real asset to our teaching staff.

Aside from teaching, Mrs. Rojemann also coaches the varsity girls volleyball team; where she continues her positive relationships with the students, teaching valuable life lessons and character building. Megan is a great role model to her students, her team, and her co-workers.

The $3,000.00 awards are being made to 102 teachers, their schools, and 162 graduating high school students.

Excellence Scholarship recipients have demonstrated excellence in the academic arena and high motivation to achieve, have displayed a broad range of activity and leadership outside the academic setting, and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond.  Fellowship recipients are chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students, their ability to motivate others, and their leadership and service within and outside the classroom.  Excellence Scholarship and Fellowship recipients are selected by a statewide committee composed of civic leaders, and representatives of education-related associations and the program’s co-sponsors:  The Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools (WCRIS), and regional Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESA).

The Kohl Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship program was established by Herb Kohl, U.S. Senator (Retired) in 1990. To date the foundation has awarded $9 million to Wisconsin educators, students and schools.  “Education is the key to the future of Wisconsin and our nation.  I am very proud of the accomplishments of these students and teachers, and look forward to the great contributions they will make in the future”, Kohl said.

Letters notifying recipients of the award were mailed by the Herb Kohl Foundation on March 13, 2015.   Regional recognition luncheons honoring the recipients will be held in a few weeks. Herb Kohl will attend all luncheons and present awards to recipients.
