MS Science Olympiad Competes in Oshkosh

The Middle School Science Olympiad team had a great experience at the regional competition Saturday at UW-Oshkosh. Our team placed 15th out of 39 teams from around southern Wisconsin. Leading the team were 8th graders Evelyn Mueller and Tyler Vaughn. Tyler competed in 6 straight events from 7:45am to 3:00pm. Tyler and her partner Natalie Ortega placed 6th in the Crime Scene analysis event.  Seventh graders Ralph Hombsch and Reed Garsky placed 7th with their Air Trajectory engineering project, and 6th graders Anna Yezzi and Natalie Ortega earned 7th place for their knowledge in our solar system. Also placing in the top 10 were Alan Thomas and Nick Hoffman in Robo-Cross.

Competition was tough this year with so many more teams attending this regional than usual. Placing in the top half were Brooke Joseph and Lily Webster for Bio-Process Lab, Brooke Joseph and Evie Mueller for Green Generation knowledge, and Justin Swanson and Alex Garza for Dynamic Planet, which covered facts about our delicate ocean ecosystem. Also placing in the top half were Alex Bowman and Alan Thomas in Fossil Identification, Tyler Vaughn and Brooke Joseph in Meteorology, Evelyn Mueller and Justin Swanson in Bridge Building, Tyler Vaughn and Alex Bowman for the "Wheeled Vehicle" event, and Anna Yezzi and Natalie Ortega for their bottle rockets.

Overall, the team worked well and supported each other as they practiced after school. Other hard-working teammates were Caitlin Burns and Tyler Naatz. The team will be attending the state competition on March 14th and will be putting in many more hours. The team will have to step up the effort where about 60 teams will congregate on the UW-Oshkosh campus.
