Advanced Chemistry Students Use Technology to Complete Lab Work

Using a pH meter attached to a Vernier LabQuest 2 data collection device, students Avery Hombsch, Alyssa Layton, and Caitlin Purpi conduct an acid-base titration with the help of their Advanced Chemistry teacher Brian Zachgo. A common question chemists have to answer is how much of something is present in a sample of a product. If the product is an acid or base, the question can usually be answered by a titration. Acid base titrations can be used to measure the concentration of an acid or base in solution, to calculate the formula mass of an unknown acid or base, or to determine the equilibrium constant of a weak acid or base.

The LabQuest 2 is a portable data collection device manufactured by Vernier, a leading maker of software and technology for science education. The device connects to a wide array of data collection devices such as the pH meter shown, sonic motion detectors, force sensors, temperature probes, and gas pressure sensors. Graphs are generated instantly as experiments are conducted, allowing students to focus their efforts on analyzing the results of their experiments. The graphs can then be saved to the device, shared with another wireless device, or printed directly from the device through a wireless connection.
