UW Madison Science Expo

Johnson Creek Middle School took their 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students to UW –Madison for the Science Festival and Science Expo held at the Wisconsin Institutes of Discovery . The 6th grade toured the Geology Museum first while the 7th grade started at D.C. Smith Greenhouses. The 8th grade learned about physical science in the hands-on section of the Physics Museum.  Pictured, is the 8th grade listening to a short talk on Newton’s laws of motion. Photo #7555 or #7553  They spent an hour exploring light, generators, motors, and electricity stations where they could manipulate features to produce different outcomes.  Ean Reichert is seeing how different architecture stands up to seismic waves in photo #7567. OR Photo #7566 shows Spencer Johnsrud experimenting with earthquake effects.
Next the students enjoyed a walking tour of campus and were able to listen and see a robotics demonstration Photo #7573.  The afternoon was filled with exciting experiences at the Wisconsin Institute of Discovery. Pictured is Ben Blanke who was chosen to help demonstrate fluid force. Ben was slowly propelled around in a circle by the fluid friction created by the spinning bicycle wheel he held in his hands photo #7596.  The program called “Wonders of Physics” is available to come to schools and covered many facets of physical science standards.
Other students made butter, put together DNA models, learned about the South Pole, and won prizes for answering fish facts.  Still others learned about liquid nitrogen uses, and astronomy. The flight simulator was also a big hit.

The mission statement of the Wisconsin Science Festival is to inspire and engage us all in the enterprise of science and discovery; to cultivate curiosity and communicate the power of knowledge and creativity to change our world view; to promote innovation and to cultivate the next generation of global citizens. The Wisconsin Science Festival is presented by a growing coalition of Madison's science and arts community headquartered in Madison, Wis. This entire program was funded by private sponsors who truly fulfilled their mission statement with the Johnson Creek students. They can’t wait for next year.
