Students Learn to Program for Android Devices

Johnson Creek High School has a 30 minute period twice a week in which students have the opportunity to work on projects that they are interested in. The time isn't a study hall, but rather an opportunity to go above and beyond the curriculum with the help of an instructor. Students have the opportunity to work on projects ranging from woodworking to science exploration to computer based projects.

Students T.J. Christensen and Madison Graf are using their enrichment time to learn about programming applications for the Android platform. T.J. and Madison are completing the programming in M.I.T.'s App Inventor program, which allows the student to work on their code in "the cloud", connecting all of their data to their Google Drive accounts.

To test their applications, T.J. and Madison are using one of the school's LearnPads, which runs on the Android operating system. Students can test their app in real time on the LearnPad, since everything is in "the cloud".

After learning basic operators, Madison and T.J. are now writing an app based on the Mad Libs word game. They will ask the user to input nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. and then the application will read (using the computerized voice) the completed story from the users chosen words.
